Utterly

Have you ever found yourself in dire circumstances where you were utterly helpless? Maybe it was a financial situation where a payment was due and you had absolutely no resources to draw from. You were stuck. You were without any options. There was nothing that you could do. You simply prayed for some kind of miracle to happen and then you waited. I remember several times where it seemed that my fate lay in the hands of someone else and I had no ability to change what was happening. It is a very lonely place to be.
Jesus’ specialty is not helping the self-sufficient, the powerful or the self-made but his specialty is in rescuing the utterly helpless; those who are completely, totally and entirely stuck without anywhere else to turn. In fact, it seems like the more utterly helpless and unworthy we are he delights even more in showing his great love. Paul states that in this amazing Scripture: Romans 5:6 When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. 7 Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. 8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.
Jesus does what nobody else will do. Jesus goes where nobody else will go. Jesus fixes what nobody else will fix. Jesus loves those who nobody else will love. Jesus doesn’t wait for you to get lovable. Jesus doesn’t wait for you to make the first move. Jesus doesn’t wait for you to get good enough. He simply waits for you to get “utterly helpless” and then, at the right time, he makes the most loving and amazing move to rescue you by actually dying for you. Nobody else will do that for you. No pastor, no priest, no minister, no pope, no missionary, no denomination, only Jesus.
I now realize that being utterly helpless and totally at the mercy of God is not a bad place to be. If I have options in the ways that I can create my own outcome I will always use those first before leaning completely upon Jesus. Jesus lets me go through my options until I’m utterly helpless. Even now our family is in an adoption situation where we love a little boy more than anything but his fate is in the hands of the judge and we are utterly helpless to create the outcome that we want. My utter helplessness simply presents an opportunity for the mighty power of Jesus to once again show his great love. He is able.
